Feeding your baby
Formula feeding
If you choose to bottle-feed your baby, it’s helpful to be well prepared. Which formula should you buy? Which bottle works best for your baby? And how do you prepare a bottle safely? Here you’ll find all the essential information to get started with confidence.
Which formula should you choose?
For a newborn, always use infant formula stage 1. This type is specifically designed for the first few months of life. Stages 2 and 3 are intended for older babies and contain different nutrients that are not suitable for newborns.
In the Netherlands, all formula brands meet strict legal standards. This means that every brand provides a safe and complete base product. Differences lie mainly in price, brand preference, and added ingredients such as probiotics or special fatty acids. There is no single brand we recommend — choose what works best for you and your baby.
Which bottle and teat should you use?
There are many types of bottles and teats available. The best one depends on your baby. A fast drinker may do better with a slow-flow teat, while a slower drinker might need a teat with a larger hole for faster flow.
Tips for choosing a bottle:
- Start with a basic newborn bottle and teat.
- Don’t buy too many bottles or teats at first — test what works best.
- Check the size of the teat opening and adjust it to your baby’s drinking pace.
- Some babies benefit from an anti-colic bottle if they swallow a lot of air while feeding.
How to prepare a bottle
Preparing a bottle seems simple, but a few steps are important for your baby’s health.
- Start with hygiene – Wash your hands and make sure the bottle and teat are clean.
- Use the right ratio – Follow the instructions on the package for the correct amount of water and powder.
- Prepare the water – Use cold tap water (unless you have lead pipes) and warm it to around 30–35°C. You can use a bottle warmer, a bowl of hot water, or the microwave.
- Add the powder – Use the provided scoop and stick to the exact amount recommended.
- Shake and check – Mix well and test the temperature with a drop on your wrist.
- Feed and discard leftovers – Allow up to 30 minutes for feeding. Discard any remaining milk afterward.
How to bottle-feed your baby
Good positioning helps your baby feed calmly and strengthens your bond. Make sure both of you are relaxed, and hold your baby close with eye contact. Your baby should sit upright, facing you, with their head resting in the crook of your arm and support under the shoulders. Switch arms regularly to avoid developing a preferred side.
Skin-to-skin contact promotes bonding and helps regulate your baby’s temperature, especially in the early weeks.
During feeding: Hold the bottle almost horizontally so that there’s always milk in the teat. Let your baby take the teat at their own pace. Feeding usually takes about 20–30 minutes; if your baby drinks too quickly, try a slower-flow teat or take short breaks. Watch for signs that your baby has had enough and help them burp to release swallowed air.
