Emotions during childbirth

Having a baby is one of the most intense experiences of your life—both physically and emotionally. You may feel excitement, tension, or uncertainty. These emotions are completely normal and part of the process. This article helps you understand what to expect and how to manage those feelings.

Common emotions during childbirth

During labor, you may experience a wide range of emotions:

  • Joy and excitement – you’re about to meet your baby!
  • Uncertainty and fear – concerns about pain or how the birth will go.
  • Frustration – when things don’t go as planned.
  • Relief and pride – when you overcome difficult moments.

It’s important to know that it’s normal to experience these emotions all at once. You’re not the only one who feels a mix of emotions during childbirth.

How your emotions can affect the birth process

Your emotions influence how your body responds during labor. Fear and stress can cause your body to tense up, which may slow down the birth process. On the other hand, positive emotions such as trust and calmness help your body relax, allowing labor to progress more smoothly.

Tips for giving space to your emotions

Embrace your feelings and allow them to be present—this supports the birthing process:

  • Prepare yourself well – knowing what to expect helps you feel calmer.
  • Talk about your emotions – share what you’re feeling with your partner, midwife, or doula. Don’t hold emotions back; it’s okay to cry, laugh, be angry, or feel euphoric!
  • Use breathing techniques – these help you stay calm and centered.
  • Create a safe environment – choose a place and people that help you feel at ease. If something doesn’t feel right, tell us. As your birth team, we’ll do everything we can to make the experience as comfortable as possible for you.
