Our approach
What we ask of you
We believe that with the right information, you’re perfectly capable of making your own choices. That’s why we don’t take a paternalistic approach: we won’t make decisions for you, but we’ll make sure you have all the facts you need. You decide what feels right for your body, your baby, and your birth. And of course, we’ll think things through with you.
We inform, you decide.
Take the lead
Your pregnancy, your birth, your choices. We think it’s important that you stay in charge and don’t simply follow what a care provider says “because that’s how it’s done.” We’re here to guide and support you, but you decide what matters most to you.
To make thoughtful choices, it helps to know what your options are—and to understand the pros and cons of each. That doesn’t mean you need to know every single detail, but it does mean being informed about the things that are important to you.
Learn as much as you like
Everyone’s different when it comes to how much information they want. Maybe you like to dive into every detail, or maybe you prefer just the main points. Both are completely fine. All our information is available through the Witsenkade Academy, so you can choose how much you want to read and learn.
The more you understand, the more confident you’ll feel making decisions about your pregnancy and birth. And if you ever have questions or doubts, we’re always here to talk things through together.
Read the articles before your check-ups
Reading the articles before your appointment helps you get the most out of your visit. It means:
- You already have some background knowledge, so you’re not hearing everything for the first time.
- You can ask focused questions about what’s important to you.
- We can make the most of our time together.
It’s not about testing you or checking whether you’ve read everything—it's simply about making our conversations as valuable and personal as possible.
Use your BRAIN(S) when making decisions
Whenever you’re faced with a choice—big or small—the BRAIN(S) method can help you think things through clearly. It helps you make decisions based on both facts and your own instincts.
BRAINS stands for:
- Benefits (What are the advantages?)
- Risks (What are the downsides or risks?)
- Alternatives (What other options are there?)
- Instinct (What does my gut feeling tell me?)
- Nothing (What happens if we wait or do nothing?)
- Second opinion or Smile (Am I comfortable with this choice?)
