Fertility journey
Preconception consultation
Are you wondering, “Do we want to have a child?” Or are you already actively trying to conceive? Then a preconception consultation is a smart first step. A bit of preparation can truly make a difference — for your own health and for your future baby.
Why book a preconception consultation?
Getting pregnant may sound simple, but there’s actually quite a lot involved. How healthy are you and your partner? Are there hereditary conditions in your families? What about your cycle and fertility? During a preconception consultation, we’ll look at your personal situation together — with care, professionalism, and attention to detail.
A preconception consultation is covered by insurance and available to anyone living in Amsterdam. You can choose an in-person or online appointment.
What to expect (and what not to expect)
You can expect:
- A personal 40-minute consultation
- Questions about your health, family history, and lifestyle
- Optional blood tests
- Advice on fertility and your cycle
- Information about genetic testing / carrier screening (if you wish)
- Tips to prepare your body (and mind) for pregnancy
- A helpful booklet to take home with all key information
You won’t get:
- A full medical check-up (such as an ultrasound or physical exam)
- Fertility investigations (like hormone testing or ultrasounds)
- A guarantee of pregnancy — but we’ll help you improve your chances
What we discuss during the consultation
1. Your health & family history
We start with a detailed questionnaire: how is your current health? Do you take any medications? Are there hereditary conditions in your families? We’ll discuss anything that’s important to know beforehand.
2. Lifestyle & nutrition
Smoking, alcohol, stress, diet, and exercise — it all plays a role when trying to conceive. We’ll talk about what you’re already doing well and where there’s room for improvement. Sometimes, small changes can make a big difference.
3. Fertility & menstrual cycle
We’ll explain how your menstrual cycle works and when you’re most fertile, so you can time intercourse more effectively. If your cycle is irregular, we’ll explore whether further testing might be needed.
4. Genetics and early testing
Some hereditary conditions can be screened for before pregnancy. We’ll explain what’s possible, how it works, and whether it might be relevant in your situation.
Carrier testing is also possible during pregnancy, but the time to make decisions is often more limited. In addition, pregnancy can be emotionally intense, which may make it more difficult to cope with unexpected results.
5. Your questions
Anything on your mind — from “Should I already start taking folic acid?” to “What if it doesn’t work?” — is welcome. No question is too small, and we’re here to think along with you.
