After childbirth

Experienced your birth as traumatic?

You or your partner may have experienced the birth as traumatic. This can happen regardless of how the birth itself went. Maybe you felt overwhelmed, powerless, or afraid — or something happened that made you feel like you had lost control.
If you notice that you remain stuck in feelings of fear, anger, or loneliness, it might mean you’ve experienced a trauma. It’s important to take this seriously and seek help. Trauma treatment is often very effective and typically involves EMDR therapy or talk therapy.

Symptoms of birth-related trauma — if you recognize one or more of the following and it’s been more than two weeks since you gave birth:

  • You keep replaying events in your mind or have flashbacks.
  • You feel jumpy, tense, or easily irritated.
  • You avoid anything that reminds you of the birth.
  • You feel disconnected from your baby or your partner.
  • You experience physical symptoms without a clear cause.

Unfortunately, some people develop Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). If you’re unsure whether your symptoms might be related to PTSD, you can take the City Birth Trauma Scale.com to see how you score.
